The steel is delivered with a small oil film and is thus not rusted on delivery. We therefore recommend a wash with lukewarm soapy water after installation to remove the oil film. Within a few weeks, depending on rainfall, the rust process will begin. If you are impatient, the process can be accelerated by a single wash followed by a salt water spray.
The final patination takes several years, during which the rust layer develops and forms a protective film on the surface. The color will go from completely orange to slightly darker over time.
A beautiful development.
Does corten steel spread rust on the surface?
Corten steel emits minimally compared to ordinary steel. However, it will always contaminate a bit on the substrate at the beginning of the rust process. When placing on tiles or wood, we therefore recommend a base plate. There are holes for drainage in the base plate, and the box will be raised approx. 5 mm. from the surface so that the water can run away. On concrete tiles, rust can be easily removed with oxalic acid.
Corten steel lasts up to 8 times longer than ordinary steel. The climate corten steel used in plays a significant role in durability. In optimal conditions, corten steel in gardens will last over 50 years, while a saline air will negatively affect longevity.
Does the steel damage the plants?
You can grow and plant all kinds of vegetables and plants in this planter. Steel is a natural material and will not emit toxic substances to your vegetables. If you are still in doubt, we recommend that you line the box with a plastic foil, flamingo, insulation mat or similar. This will also insulate the soil from the sides of the box and extend its life.
