Corten steel requires no maintenance – quite the opposite.
Over time, the material develops a protective rust patina that prevents through-corrosion and gives a warm, natural appearance.
🧽 Rinse lightly with mild soapy water after installation to remove the oil film.
🌦️ The patina develops over a few weeks, depending on the weather.
💡 If you want to speed up the patination process, you can lightly spray the surface with saltwater.

No – corten steel does not release harmful substances. If you want extra protection, you can line the sides of the raised bed with plastic foil or insulation mats.
Will rust run off onto the surface underneath?
Some runoff may occur at the beginning of the patination process. You can use gravel or a bottom plate underneath to protect paving or other surfaces.
How long does corten steel last?
Corten steel lasts up to eight times longer than ordinary steel – in optimal conditions over 50 years.
How can I speed up the patination process?
Wash the raised bed with warm water and lightly spray with saltwater. The process is faster in humid weather.
